DRS e-Counting delivers seventh STV by-election in Scotland
DRS e-Counting solutions have once again delivered results efficiently and effectively, this time in the Doon Valley Ward by-election in East Ayrshire. This is the seventh time DRS e-Counting has been successfully employed in Scotland.
Returning Officer, Fiona Lees said the Doon Valley Ward election count was carried out very efficiently with results being available within 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The returned postal ballot papers and those completed at polling stations, totaling 2449 ballot papers, were electronically counted using two award winning DRS PhotoScribe® scanners in just 39 minutes. The papers were registered, scanned, verified and adjudicated where necessary by the Returning Officer and her staff. On this occasion the winning candidate was elected at the first stage of the complex single transferable count. But with all preferences captured from every ballot paper, any subsequent stages would have been immediately available to the Returning Officer.
Fiona Lees, Returning Officer, comments “This is the third time DRS e-Counting technologies have been successfully used in East Ayrshire. As the complex single transferable vote system was used for this by-election, electronic counting was our best option. It allows us to produce a result more quickly than would ever be the case with manual counting.”
DRS elections specialist, Sonya Anderson comments: “DRS is delighted to have worked with East Ayrshire Council once again, this time on the Doon Valley Ward by-election. It is our ongoing aim to help reduce the administrative burden of elections, whilst ensuring the security, integrity and accuracy of the results. It is a great pleasure to be working in partnership with East Ayrshire Council who once again has shown their commitment to the modernisation of their electoral processes.”
