DRS successfully delivers critical Sudan census project
Global census data capture specialist, DRS, has supplied its technologies and services to successfully process and deliver the results of the fifth population census of Sudan, revealing its overall population figure as more than thirty-nine million.
With the last successful national population census dating back more than 20 years, the fifth population census of Sudan was the country's most ambitious and important statistical project ever. The delivery is a key requirement for the organisation of the mid-term general elections and its completion marks a significant milestone in the implementation of the Statistical Information Strategy that is outlined in the Joint Assessment Mission Sudan. The census results will also be used to inform the decision-making process within the government, business and NGO sectors, as well as enable policy and programme monitoring.
To ensure the results for this critical census were processed accurately, transparently and securely, DRS was contracted by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to supply its world leading census solutions including 12 of its award winning PhotoScribe® scanners and census software, staff training and 11 million specially designed census forms (equivalent to 27 articulated trucks). DRS travelled to Sudan to support the northern and southern administration teams in managing this highly complex data collection exercise.
Ninety thousand enumerators were involved in the data collection exercise which started in April 2008 and had to be completed before the rainy season forced parts of the population to migrate. Enumeration was completed in August and DRS’ award winning scanning technology had captured and processed the data from the millions of forms in a matter of a few months.
The census was seen as critical with results not only having to be made available quickly, but also that the integrity of the technology used to capture the census data was accepted by all parties. DRS was chosen as the supplier due to its reputation of 40 years of successful delivery of mission critical data capture projects.
Gary Brighton, DRS operations director comments: "We are proud to have been selected by the UNFPA, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) and the Southern Sudan Commission for Census Statistics & Evaluation (SSCCSE) to deliver the solution for this complex, sensitive and vital data capture exercise. Our proven track record in delivering large scale voter registration, election and census projects has always made DRS a safe choice for customers where results have to be delivered first time and on time. We are delighted that, by working closely with and supported by teams from the UNFPA, CBS, SSCCSE and the Sudanese government, we were able to successfully deliver on this critical project."
DRS census data capture solutions are proven to deliver accurate, reliable and up to date census results for analysis in a matter of a few months rather than the years it might take using traditional methods. Having successfully delivered fifteen census projects around the world, DRS continues to improve efficiencies that deliver results quickly and accurately.
