DRS GPS census device couples as key support for GCSE syllabus
With the new geography GCSE syllabus, starting September 2009, to include the use of GPS devices, education technology provider DRS is planning to offer its own GPS device to the education market. Designed as probably the ‘worlds simplest GPS device’, this unique device was originally designed for census population registration projects around the world for use in field data collection activities, but is well placed to be used in the new curriculum due to its simplicity and robustness.
The DRS GPS device is tough and easy to use, determining exact latitude and longitude location to an accuracy of less than three metres. There is no menu system to navigate; the user simply switches it on, and once the satellite positions are fixed, the coordinates are displayed.
The device is fully compatible with all geographic information system (GIS) applications to support the national curriculum and is suitable for use in Key Stage two (7-11 years), three, (11-14 years) and four (14-16 years). The device supports students with their geography coursework and assists them in the capture of GPS location information during out of classroom exercises. In addition to geo-caching activities relating to the curriculum, the DRS GPS device can also be used for more fun activities in schools such as treasure hunts.
Denton van Niekerk, global sales and marketing director at DRS, comments: “Having provided the education market with data collection technology for 40 years, it seemed natural to offer our GPS device to support the new geography GCSE syllabus. The DRS GPS device is receiving some excellent reviews in the census world; and we are working with a number of schools and Geography educationalists who are agreeing that it will probably prove just as useful to students.”
