Global data capture specialist DRS announces Board level changes
Global data capture specialist DRS has announced the retirement of its founder and non-executive chairman, Malcolm Brighton, OBE, DL. Mr Brighton stood down from the DRS Board and from its Remuneration and Nominations Committees at the close of the Company’s Annual General Meeting on Monday 11th May. Sir David Brown was appointed as the Company’s new non-executive chairman and will also serve as chairman of the Nominations Committee.
Tony Lee, chief executive officer at DRS commented: “Malcolm was instrumental in establishing the company in 1969 and he built the business as its managing director until 2001 when he became chairman. He successfully floated DRS on the London Stock Exchange in 1994 and has played a major part in its growth to becoming a world leader in data capture. I was honoured to take over from Malcolm as managing director and would like to thank him for his tremendous contribution to the company over the years.”
Comments Malcolm: “It has been a great privilege to have been involved with DRS over the past 40 years, both as managing director and chairman. I leave the post with a great deal of pride in the progress that DRS has made in recent years and with complete confidence in the further progress it will make under my successor, Sir David Brown. I would like to give my personal thanks to the chief executive, Tony Lee and the entire Board for its support over the years. But most of all I would like to give my thanks to the staff at DRS, I believe we now have the strongest management team in the entire history of DRS with a world leading reputation in our markets in which we operate.”
Sir David Brown, age 58, was chairman of Motorola’s UK company for nearly 12 years until mid-2008. He is currently senior independent director of Ceres Power Holdings plc and a non-executive director of Domino Printing Sciences plc. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Quality Institute, and a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute. Sir David was knighted in 2001 for services to British Industry.
Comments Sir David: “I am honoured and privileged to be appointed to the Chair of this remarkable company. At every turn, industry is exhorted to innovate and advised how to do it. Yet for 40 years this innovative company called DRS has been practising what others now preach.
DRS is a leader in innovative technologies, including particularly intelligent scanning and related systems and software. It is a leader in innovative service delivery, in the UK and in several other parts of the world. Indeed its many educational, governmental and commercial customers regard service as DRS’ defining ethos. And it is a leader in innovative quality practices. DRS’ customers need the company to have total dependability running through its veins, and it has.
Such has been the consistency of DRS’ innovative prowess over 40 years that in the markets it serves the company can be said not so much to have changed with the times as to have changed the times. I very much look forward to playing my part in writing the next chapters of the distinguished success story that is DRS Data & Research Services plc.”
