Independent review of Scottish elections welcomed by DRS

23rd October 2007

DRS today welcomes publication of the independent external review of the May 2007 Scottish elections. The review, led by elections expert Ron Gould CM concludes that there is no evidence that the use of electronic counting contributed to the number of rejected ballot papers. In fact the report recommends that electronic counting be used for future combined parliamentary and local government elections – or local government elections alone when the STV system is used.

The report also calls for legislative and policy frameworks that guide electronic counting, as these are currently underdeveloped. DRS fully supports Gould’s proposed review of legislation and political involvement to ensure that e-Counting technology is properly integrated into the electoral process and DRS looks forward to helping to shape these frameworks.

DRS is dedicated to the delivery of secure, robust technologies for the counting of complex large-scale elections and has earned a worldwide reputation over the last decade for delivering accurate and secure e-Counting solutions. Indeed, the report stresses that DRS treated the robustness of its solution seriously and allocated appropriate amounts of time and resources to its electronic counting solution used in Scotland.
