Oman e-Counting success leads to award of 2007 National Elections contract

06th September 2007

DRS has been awarded the contract to supply up to 500,000 ballot papers and to lease 76 PhotoScribe® PS900 scanners for the next Oman National Elections.

Taking place next month, the elections are to select representatives for the Omani National Consultative Council, known as the Majlis As’Shura.

This highly complex election requires DRS to design and print the ballot papers in Arabic script containing both the name and full colour photograph of each candidate.

The high-speed PS900 optical mark scanners will be counting the ballots whilst accurately and securely recording the results in 61 counting centres across Oman. DRS will be assisting local partners Bahwan IT, a leading Omani company, who will be providing the logistically complex e-Counting project.

This contract follows the success of the last Oman elections project in October 2003 when DRS supplied ballot forms and scanners. The Deputy Chairman of the elections committee, Sheikh Said bin Mohammed Al Braiki, was delighted with the quality and speed of the count, with all votes counted across the country within just a few hours of close of polls.
