DRS data capture technology utilises NASA space components
The same photonics technology used in a number of NASA space missions is also used by British based data capture specialists, DRS in its range of Optical Mark Readers. The OMR scanners are designed and manufactured in DRS’ head office in Milton Keynes and are used to electronically capture data from forms by tens of thousands of educational, government, public and private sector establishments.
The OMR products use the S1223 PIN photodiode from Hamamatsu, this is a sensitive optical device deployed for high speed optical measurement. The S1223 has been used in various NASA space voyages, most notably the Mars Pathfinder space mission, where it was employed to test rock and soil samples on the surface of Mars.
The S1223 is currently used in a number of DRS scanners including the CD230, CD360, CD400 and CD800 scanners which are used to scan and record information from high profile mission critical projects, such as pupil registration and attendance, examination processing, voter registration, ballot counting and complex survey work all around the world.
