DRS to host election practitioner STV forum

09th November 2004

DRS can announce that it will be holding an exclusive workshop for election practitioners aimed at overcoming the complexities that STV and proportional representation brings. The event will take place on the afternoon of Tuesday 7th December at the prestigious Edinburgh Castle, immediately after the Scottish AEA Branch Meeting and AGM, and will provide delegates with the opportunity to share, examine and discuss the issues and challenges surrounding the management of highly complex elections.

A variety of guest speakers including Belfast City Council, London Borough of Enfield and Electoral Reform Balloting Services will share their experiences of processing and delivering complex STV counts, and delegates will hear how DRS e-Counting technology has been proven to streamline the count process.

Managing and delivering democracy is a fundamental role for local and central government alike. However as Scotland, Northern Ireland and other areas of the UK embrace more complex election types including proportional representation and STV, this brings about a whole new series of challenges in delivering results.

STV elections may bring acclaimed benefits to the voting electorate, but they will undoubtedly bring a headache for any election official! With particular emphasis on the counting and processing of the votes, a number of highly complex processes are involved. Traditional methods of counting are slow, expensive and widely open to human error, and are simply incompatible with the complexities that STV brings.

DRS has over three decades of experience working in partnership with Authorities around the world to deliver complex electronic counts quickly, accurately and securely, and is recognised as a worldwide specialist in election count management. The unique technology developed by DRS can process, count and record all types of complex ballot papers, and compile election results for declarations in a matter of hours rather than days. DRS e-Counting technology is extremely accurate and when used in a complex count is much faster that other methods, maintaining a complete audit trail, improving security and dramatically reducing the manual processes and risk of human error.
