DRS launches groundbreaking new PS900 PhotoScribe® scanner

14th September 2004

DRS today announced the launch of its latest data and image capture scanner, the PS900. Built around Microsoft .NET architecture DRS PhotoScribe® technology provides unique Imaging and Optical Mark Recognition using the latest contact head technology to electronically capture data and images from forms. The PS900 features the latest generation in contact imaging technology and is suitable for a wide range of data capture exercises including examination processing, electronic vote counting, voter and refugee registration, census and other large-scale or complex surveys.

The PS900 works by using drop-out imaging techniques to mask background parts of the form and electronically capture the remaining data. Combining OMR and image recognition, the PS900 can detect and record a variety of items on a form including barcodes, photos and other marks that are often used as security features to validate forms. The scanner features unique imaging capabilities that not only recognise the forms and the information contained, but also captures multiple area high quality bitonal and grey-scale images on the fly, which reduces storage and post processing costs and means the relevant data is available immediately.

The scanner itself automatically feeds the forms through a sophisticated imaging head at a rate of 2 per second and ensures images are captured in the correct orientation, regardless of which way sheets are stacked into the input hopper.

“The PS900 represents the latest development in high volume data capture technology,” commented Steve Beats, technical director, DRS. “The flexibility built into the product by our highly skilled and dedicated team of in-house developers ensures the PS900 can be applied to any data capture project no matter how complex!”

The PS900 features an integrated PC and CD writer and is available from DRS or through its worldwide network of global distributors. The technology can also be provided on a project by project basis through its fully equipped bureau facility, this is particularly beneficial for customers who wish DRS to project manage the entire project on site.
