National education award sponsored by DRS

13th June 2003

A talented Essex student, who only arrived in the UK in 2001, has won a prestigious national academic award sponsored by DRS Data & Research Services plc.

Zohra Khalpey, 18, from Romford, who attends Havering College in Hornchurch, moved to England two years ago from Zimbabwe and has stunned her tutors with her dedication and achievements. She was one of six finalists for the Edexcel Academic Achievement Award and won after impressing the panel of judges with "amazing application to her studies under great adversity and her commitment to the community and social issues."

Miss Khalpey will be presented with £1,000 sponsored prize money to spend on an educational activity or item of her choice by DRS’ Education General Manager, Martyn Roan, at the award ceremony next month. Her college will also receive £1,000.

She will now be entered for the Outstanding Student of the Year Award, which is being judged by a celebrity panel including chef and I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here contestant Antony Worrall-Thompson, Falkland’s war veteran Simon Weston OBE, ex-TV newsreader turned teacher Anne Dawson and former MP and journalist Martin Bell OBE. The overall winner will receive an additional £5,000 to spend on furthering their education, and their school, college or training centre will also receive £5,000.

All the awards will be presented at a special dinner at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square on 9th July 2003, hosted by television presenter Kate Humble. The guest of honour is the Rt. Hon. Charles Clarke MP, Secretary of State for Education and Skills, who will be presenting the top prize to the Outstanding Student of the Year.
