DRS to work on first ever multiple Council election count

02nd April 2003

DRS has been awarded the contract to provide its proven e-counting solution for the first ever unique multiple Council election count in May 2003. This will be the first time that a group of authorities have joined together to undertake an electoral pilot.

Derwentside, Chester-le-Street and Wear Valley District Councils have joined forces and their District and Parish elections will be conducted as all postal, the ballot papers will all be counted electronically using DRS e-counting technology and the count will be conducted in a central location in Stanley, County Durham for all three authorities.

With a combined electorate of approximately 160,000, DRS is providing the complete e-counting solution for the all postal and fully e-counted election, from designing and printing the ballot papers to scanning the postal votes. DRS sophisticated imaging scanners will ensure the count is achieved faster and more accurately than other methods.

Mike Bonser, Returning Officer at Derwentside District Council said "Not only is an all out postal ballot and electronic count unique, but this is the first time three authorities have agreed to work on such a project – two firsts." Mick Waterson, Returning Officer at Chester-le-Street added "Electronic counting supports postal voting and we are looking forward to not only a greater turnout, but also greater efficiency, while at the same time working in partnership with other authorities during the vote counting processes." Wear Valley Returning Officer, Ian Phillips said "The Government wishes to achieve increased turnouts at all elections and postal voting has proven to be successful everywhere in encouraging people to vote."
