DRS to work on election pilots never trialled before in the UK
DRS has been awarded the contract for the e-counting element the 2003 Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council local elections where a unique method of e-counting will be trialled for the first time in the UK.
With an electorate of approximately 38,000, Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council is running a multi-channel e-voting and e-counting pilot scheme where each voter will have the option to vote by post, internet, telephone or interactive digital TV. Traditional poling stations will not be used in this election.
DRS is providing the complete e-counting solution for the postal ballots including support, specialist design and printing of the postal ballot papers, supplying postal ballot packs and sophisticated image scanners to count the votes. Returned postal ballots will be scanned and recorded as they are received and opened leading up to the close of poll. This will mean a minimal amount of ballot handling after the close of polls ensuring a result is available far quicker than manual methods.
DRS is also working on the first ever multiple council election count on the same night. Derwentside, Chester-le-Street and Wear Valley District Councils have joined forces to undertake an all postal ballot with a centralised electronic count in Stanley, County Durham. This will be the first time a group of authorities has joined together to undertake an electoral pilot, with a combined electorate of approximately 160,000, the all postal District and Parish elections will be counted electronically using DRS sophisticated e-counting technology.
