DRS to process 2002 Tanzania National Population Census

26th July 2002

After several years of planning and providing advice and support, DRS has been awarded the 2002 Tanzania National Population Census project to be carried out in August 2002. Involving the design, print, distribution and data capture of 17.5 million census forms of 2 different types, the project is extremely large volume, complex and time-critical.

Initial discussions for the project started in 1995, ultimately leading to DRS successfully processing 100,000 completed census forms, using its automated data capture technology, in under 24 hours during a pilot held in Tanzania last year.

DRS will be working in collaboration with the Tanzania Census Office and the National Examinations Council of Tanzania on the census project, which is seen by the Tanzanian Government as an excellent opportunity for transferring technical expertise and developing self sufficiency in the field of data capture. In addition to providing forms, DRS will be supplying 12 DRS CD800 automatic Optical Mark Readers, associated software and full technical back-up and support throughout the scanning process. The census forms will be distributed throughout Tanzania next month, completed and then returned to a central site in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania for processing commencing in October. It is estimated that the data will be processed and collected in under 4 months.
