DRS Sponsors 2002 National Academic Achievement Award
DRS has sponsored a talented Bedfordshire teenager who achieved the highest GCSE grades in the county for the prestigious national Edexcel Achievement in Education Awards 2002.
Rachel Samme,18, a pupil at Hastingbury School and Community College in Kempston, wins £1,000 prize money to spend on an educational activity or item of her choice. Her school also receives £1,000.
Rachel passed 11 full GCSEs and two short-course GCSEs in 2000, all with the top A* grade. Last year she achieved straight A grades in her AS exams, and is predicted to get top marks in her A Level Biology, Chemistry and French exams she will take this summer.
Rachel was one of six students short-listed for the Academic Achievement Award. She was interviewed at Edexcel’s headquarters in London by a panel of education specialists. The judges were impressed by her academic success and by her work with children with disabilities.
Now, as winner of her category, she stands a real chance of winning the Outstanding Student of the Year Award, which is being judged by a high profile panel including Bear Grylls, the youngest Briton to climb Everest, and David Elleray, Premiership referee and school teacher. Rachel will know the outcome when all the awards are presented at a special dinner at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in central London on 11th July, hosted by BBC news presenter Sophie Raworth. Guests will include the Edexcel President, HRH The Duke of Kent.
DRS Managing Director, Tony Lee, said: "Everyone at DRS wishes Rachel every success, she has done incredibly well to have won the Academic Achievement Award, and we wish her luck on 11th July as the announcement is made for the Outstanding Student of the year Award."
