E-counting in the 2002 local elections

07th May 2002

DRS, a British designer and manufacturer of e-counting solutions, successfully delivered the results for the May 2002 Westminster and Rugby local elections in record time.

The elections were complex with a variety of wards and various numbers of councilors and parties. If counted manually, they would have taken around eight hours. DRS’ e-counting equipment counted both elections in less than half the time.

With twenty wards, 178 candidates, 6 parties and an average turnout of 27%, it took DRS just two and a half hours to count the Westminster elections.

Meanwhile, in Rugby, with boundary changes, 20 wards and 4 parishes and just under 40% turnout, the votes were counted in around 3 hours.

With extensive experience in providing full voting solutions, DRS has worked on a wide range of electoral projects including the proportional elections in Norway for nine years, elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1998 and 2000 and the highly complex London Assembly and Mayoral elections in 2000.
