Mark Bedlow

AQA Director of Delivery and Chair of DRS Executive Committee

Mark joined AQA in June 2019. He is responsible for leading AQA Operations, Customer Service and DRS teams which collectively are accountable for the delivery of our exams. He also oversees our strategic programmes and the contribution they make to achieving our strategy.

Previously, he worked at OCR for 6 years where he was the Director of Regulation and Business Performance, and the Responsible Officer. He oversaw the end-to-end delivery of both general and vocational qualifications. Mark had direct responsibility for the project management office, special requirements, malpractice, appeals and OCR’s relationship with the regulators.  

Mark is a chartered accountant and prior to joining OCR, worked for PwC for 20 years across a range of roles, locations and industries, including travel and tourism, technology start-ups and risk management.  

Since 2015, he has been a member of the board for the Joint Council for Qualifications, and its chair since March 2018. He is also a member of the Finance and Scrutiny Committee of a multi-academy trust, which gives him valuable insight into the challenges that AQA’s customers face.

Nick Stevens

AQA Director of Finance and Corporate Services

Nick joined AQA in March 2017. He is responsible for AQA financial strategy and management, and for leading a number of other corporate functions, including business planning, procurement and facilities. Nick is an Executive Director of DRS as well as a Board member of the Oxford International AQA Examinations joint venture with Oxford University Press.

Nick is a Chartered Accountant, and has worked across the public, charity and private sectors. Before joining AQA, he was a member of the Executive Board at Tribal Group, where he led a number of service businesses operating in the education sector across the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Previously, he held roles as a Director of Resources for an international charity, was a divisional Chief Operating Officer for Tribal’s Government Division, and was a management consultant with Tribal and Accenture. Nick began his career at the National Audit Office.

Bernadette Brooks

Managing Director, DRS

Bernadette joined DRS in June 2012 and held roles in account management and as Professional Services Director until shortly after the acquisition by AQA in summer 2016, when Bernadette was appointed as Managing Director. She has responsibility for the overall performance of DRS and delivering its strategic objectives, including its mission to be the best provider of e-Assessment software and services. 


With substantial commercial experience gained in a variety of roles, Bernadette has devoted a significant part of her career to the delivery of solutions and services in the education sector. As General Manager of Naace, the ICT Association, and as Director of Operations at Ramesys Professional Services she championed the use of technology in schools, colleges, universities, libraries and membership organisations for over two decades, after an early career as a Mathematics and Computer Science teacher in the UK and Dubai.

Martin Lloyd

Director of Finance, DRS

Martin joined DRS in March 2017. He is responsible for DRS's financial strategy and management, and for leading a number of other corporate functions, including human resources, legal and systems compliance, health and safety, procurement and facilities. 

Martin is a Chartered Management Accountant and has worked within retail, wholesale, warehouse and logistics. Before joining DRS, he was the Finance Director for Liz Earle Beauty Co. Ltd.

Previously, he held roles as a Director of Finance for Boots Ireland, Finance Director of Hospital Management and Supplies Ltd, Head of Finance Alliance Healthcare and Head of Management Information Boots. Martin began his career in the warehouse and logistics sector.

Gary Brighton

Director of Sales & Marketing, DRS

Gary joined DRS Bureau operations in 1997 and was appointed Bureau Manager in 1998 and Associate Director in 2001 with responsibility for both Bureau and Print Operations before his subsequent appointment to the PLC Board in March 2003 as Operations Director.  In 2014 Gary moved to the role of Director of Sales & Marketing with additional responsibility for R&D and Product Development.  In this combined role Gary is responsible for shaping the strategy and implementation of new products and services for both DRS customers and the Company itself.

Prior to joining DRS Gary was involved in IT Consultancy for 9 years for companies including Credit Suisse in Zurich and Proctor & Gamble UK before spending 4 years as Head of IT for Countrywide Independent Advisors, a part of the Misys PLC group.

Mark Collins

Director of Operations, DRS

Mark joined DRS in July 2012 as Bureau Operations Manager, becoming Head of Bureau in 2016. Mark was appointed Director of Operations in October 2017 and has responsibility for the operational delivery of e-Assessment and print customer projects along with manufacturing and engineering support functions. 

Mark has a wealth of experience gained over many years working in the retail operations and logistics sector, for companies such as Tesco and Iceland. In addition to traditional retail operations, Mark spent many years focused on e-Commerce fulfilment with amazon.co.uk as Senior Operations Manager during which time he led the team through a significant period of growth and was part of the senior team that relocated the fulfilment centre from 35,000 sq ft to 740,000 sq ft. Mark was also responsible for securing Amazons second fulfilment centre on the outskirts of Glasgow in Scotland.

James Coxon

Director of Technology, DRS

James joined DRS as Director of Technology in May 2019.  Over a varied career spanning private and public sector, as well as private equity, backed businesses, James has worked in technology roles where his focus has been on delivering innovative products, first-class support and complex, transformational change. 

After a long spell at News International, where challenges included creating technology functions, building new factories, improving the supply chain and the emergence of online channels alongside traditional printed products, James joined Royal Mail where building joined-up operational systems was key. The move to City Link saw James join a management team working alongside Private Equity to turnaround a business through the use of improved technology, better operational processes and cost control. 

The Private Equity theme continued when James joined National Car Parks, this time helping to drive growth through the introduction of digital products.  At DRS, James is looking forward to developing and enhancing the brilliant e-Marker® systems, to make sure that DRS continues to achieve its mission of being the best provider of e-assessment software and services.
